Description

Navigate the Riptide: 3 Steps to Data Driven Decisions with Optimism despite Uncertainty

The world is changing faster than the weather on a mountain, creating unprecedented levels of ambiguity that impact our decision-making, leadership, and performance. Many leaders feel like they’re navigating a storm without a compass, struggling to achieve their goals. Constant change and ambiguity blocks progress, as outdated instincts keep us stuck in the status quo.

While over 80% of companies identify innovation as a key priority, only 3% are ready to deliver on those goals. Ask yourself, is your organization in the 3%? If not, you must address the impact of change and ambiguity on leaders as a critical factor. Our human desire for certainty triggers a knee-jerk response to ambiguity, hindering creativity and impacting wellbeing across teams and organizations.

Traditional approaches to ambiguity and change often lead to an avalanche of directives and guidelines, a misguided path down never-ending rabbit holes in a vain attempt to find certainty. But this micromanagement treats the discomfort without addressing the disease. By resolving ambiguity in the wrong places, leaders stifle creativity and autonomy at the individual and team level. The true solution lies in a paradoxical approach: establishing clear expectations and responsibilities at the macro level, while allowing for more flexibility and autonomy at the micro level, which empowers individuals and teams to face uncertainty with confidence.

Leaders must develop foundational skills to thrive within ambiguity. Only then will an organization be ready to deliver innovation goals and mobilize talent effectively. “Tolerance of Ambiguity” is a critical competency to navigate the future with clarity, confidence and optimism. Dr. Brookfield’s proprietary, data-driven 3-step approach provides leaders with specific and actionable change management skills. The 3C framework includes; Catch On (awareness), Consider Data (mindful data analysis), and Create Solutions (creative problem-solving.)

Instead of following rabbit holes, leaders will forge a new path through uncertainty, with data-driven decisions for creative problem-solving and innovation.

In this engaging and interactive keynote, Dr. Brookfield will guide leaders to:

Build a Resilient & Innovative Culture: Cultivate a workplace where teams are empowered to take small risks, and solve their own problems, leading to increased employee engagement and breakthrough solutions.

Transform Uncertainty into Opportunity: Shift from change exhaustion to excitement, fostering a thriving culture that embraces ambiguity and creativity.

Empower Teams to Excel: Equip teams with the tools to navigate change with confidence, make bolder (and data driven) decisions, and adapt to anything that comes their way.

Transform change resistance into a catalyst for growth. Imagine a workplace where employees are not just adaptable to change, but excited by it. Organizations with creative teams who are more comfortable in uncertainty are empowered to innovate, and engaged with their purpose and the goals of the organization.

As a certified administrator of the IAM ambiguity assessment developed by the University of Queensland and AdaptIQminds, Caroline will equip your leaders with the tools and insights they need to navigate change with confidence, inspire their teams, and drive lasting organizational success.

Dr. Brookfield’s session at the Ontario Young Leaders Conference 2024 was one of the most inspiring experiences I’ve ever had. Her approach to creativity and embracing ambiguity offered a fresh perspective on how we view social situations and the uncertainties that come with them. The session was so engaging that I wished for more time to explore her ideas.

I appreciated how she emphasized that creativity not only helps us become more comfortable with uncertainty but also reduces burnout. Her concept of connecting change with familiar elements really resonated with me, showing how we can unlock new opportunities by accepting uncertainty. Dr. Brookfield’s passion created a supportive atmosphere that encouraged us to think differently about our challenges.

Learning Objectives

In this engaging and insightful session, your leaders will:

  • Implement Data-Driven Decisions in Uncertainty: Apply the 3C Framework (Catch On, Consider Data, Create Solutions) to analyze situations, interpret data, and generate creative solutions in uncertain environments
  • Break through Leader Bias to Activate Creativity: Identify and overcome the natural unconscious bias that hinders creativity and autonomy for decision making.
  • Develop Tolerance of Ambiguity: Apply specific actions to enhance leader comfort in uncertainty for organizational well being, creative problem-solving skills and innovative thinking.
  • Cultivate Adaptability: Challenge assumptions, embrace new ideas, and foster a mindset of continuous learning and adaptation in the face of uncertainty.

I realized that I was creative, but did not label it as creativity. I was associating creativity with arts. You kind of democratized creativity. I'm less stressed and I'm able to think more deeply. I'm much more at peace with myself and I'm a better human. Thanks so much.
